The U.S. data center jobs market is growing faster than the broader hiring market in 2026, but the opportunity is not evenly distributed. Demand is concentrated around large technology employers, a small group of infrastructure hubs, and occupations that keep physical facilities powered, cooled, connected, secured, and available around the clock.

Indeed Hiring Lab reported in July 2026 that U.S. data center job postings had more than doubled over the previous two years. The practical outlook is positive for technicians, electricians, HVAC specialists, network workers, commissioning professionals, construction teams, and operations leaders. It is less accurate to describe the trend as a universal technology hiring boom. The strongest demand is physical, site-based, skills-driven, and clustered around places where employers can secure power, land, fiber, and permits.

How We Built This U.S. Data Center Jobs Report

This report combines several datasets because no single official occupation called “data center worker” captures the whole labor market. A facility may employ hardware technicians, network specialists, critical facilities engineers, electricians, HVAC technicians, security personnel, logistics workers, construction managers, project controls professionals, and vendor teams. Many of those workers are classified under broader industries or occupations.

The most current hiring signal comes from Indeed, which counts U.S. postings containing “data center,” “datacenter,” or “data-center” in the title or description. That method captures current demand but can include some jobs whose relationship to a facility is indirect. LinkedIn measures members, skills, and hiring activity across its platform. U.S. Census Bureau workforce data provide a narrower historical view built from industries associated with data processing, hosting, and related services.

Industry economic-impact studies use broader definitions. A 2026 PwC study commissioned by the Data Center Coalition estimated 1,005,080 direct U.S. data center industry jobs in 2024 and 5.5 million jobs after indirect and induced effects. Those totals should not be compared directly with the Census Bureau's 501,000-worker estimate for 2023 because the underlying definitions, years, and economic models differ.

For compensation context, this report uses Indeed's data-center-specific pay comparisons and the Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2025 national wage estimates for adjacent occupations. BLS occupation figures cover the entire U.S. economy, not data centers alone. They are useful benchmarks, not promises of what a particular employer or market will pay.

Data Center Hiring Has More Than Doubled

The clearest 2026 labor-market signal is the divergence between data center hiring and the rest of the market. According to Indeed Hiring Lab, data center job postings more than doubled between June 2024 and June 2026. During approximately the same period, total U.S. postings declined around 12%, while non-data-center technology postings fell 6%.

That contrast matters. A rising posting count during a broad hiring expansion can simply reflect the economy. A rising count while total and adjacent technology postings contract points to sector-specific demand. AI infrastructure is a major driver, but the hiring is not limited to people building AI models. It is showing up in the physical work required to construct and operate the computing environment.

The share of all U.S. job postings tied to data centers tripled from about two per 1,000 in mid-2023 to six per 1,000 in 2026. The number remains small relative to the entire labor market, so this is a fast-growing specialty rather than a replacement for the technology sector as a whole.

LinkedIn's research reinforces the entry-level side of the trend. Data center technician hiring rose 108% from October through December 2025 compared with the same period in 2024, placing the occupation among the five fastest-growing entry-level roles in the United States. This does not mean every applicant will find an easy path in. It means employers were adding early-career technicians much faster than a year earlier.

Who Is Driving Data Center Hiring?

Hiring is highly concentrated. Indeed found that the ten largest technology firms by market capitalization accounted for 71% of U.S. data center postings in 2026. That concentration gives major employers and their construction, operations, and staffing partners an outsized influence on where and when openings appear.

A hyperscale campus also creates several layers of hiring. The owner or cloud provider may advertise technicians, engineers, managers, and security roles. A colocation provider may hire site operations and customer-support teams. General contractors and subcontractors recruit electricians, pipefitters, controls technicians, commissioning specialists, safety professionals, and project managers. Equipment vendors add field-service roles for UPS systems, generators, switchgear, chillers, controls, racks, and network hardware.

The company named on the building may represent only one part of the local workforce.

The Roles Leading Data Center Job Growth

Data center work is increasingly a blend of IT, skilled trades, industrial operations, and construction. Indeed found that installation and maintenance workers represented roughly one-quarter of data center postings in 2026. IT infrastructure, operations and support, plus installation and maintenance, together made up half of all postings.

Data Center Technicians and Hardware Operations

Technician roles cover server installation, rack-and-stack work, component replacement, cable tracing, inventory, diagnostics, remote hands, ticket documentation, and escalation. AI clusters increase the value of experience with GPUs, high-speed interconnects, dense rack layouts, firmware, telemetry, and strict handling procedures. Entry routes range from IT support and structured cabling to warehouse technology, electronics repair, and military communications.

Critical Facilities and Electrical Operations

Critical facilities teams operate and maintain the power and cooling systems that keep computing available. Common titles include critical facilities technician, data center facilities engineer, electrical technician, operating engineer, controls technician, and shift engineer. Deloitte found that data center postings for electrical technicians increased more than 180% between 2023 and 2025—the largest gain among the occupations in its analysis. Postings for power plant operators rose just over 56%.

This demand reflects the equipment mix inside and around a modern site: utility feeds, substations, switchgear, uninterruptible power supplies, batteries, generators, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, air handlers, coolant distribution units, building controls, and monitoring systems. Employers need people who can follow procedures, recognize abnormal conditions, communicate clearly, and work safely around mission-critical systems.

Network, Fiber, and Connectivity Roles

Network technicians, fiber technicians, infrastructure engineers, and network support specialists install and troubleshoot the physical and logical connections between racks, buildings, carriers, and cloud regions. AI infrastructure adds demand for high-speed Ethernet, InfiniBand, optical transceivers, structured cabling, fiber inspection, and low-loss installation practices.

Construction, Commissioning, and Project Delivery

New campuses require construction managers, superintendents, schedulers, estimators, safety professionals, electricians, pipefitters, sheet-metal workers, controls contractors, quality teams, and commissioning agents. Private data center construction spending approached a $60 billion seasonally adjusted annual rate in May 2026, according to U.S. Census data cited by Indeed, after rising 23% over the prior year.

These jobs often arrive before permanent site operations hiring. Commissioning sits between construction and operations: teams verify that electrical, mechanical, controls, and failover systems perform as designed before a facility enters service.

Indeed found that these roles sit toward the lower end of the traditional tech salary range, particularly when compared with software engineering. The more useful comparison is between an infrastructure worker inside and outside the data center sector.

For installation and maintenance postings that disclose hourly compensation, Indeed found a median data center premium of $10 per hour, or 42%, compared with non-data-center jobs in the same occupational group. Among postings disclosing annual pay, the median advertised premium was 12%.

Current national wage benchmarks help frame the range of occupations involved. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported these May 2025 mean annual wages across all U.S. industries:

  • Network and computer systems administrators: $103,680
  • Electricians: $71,490

Where Data Center Jobs Are Growing in 2026

Infrastructure capacity is not the same thing as job-posting volume, but the two signals help identify markets with established operations or an active development pipeline. The strongest 2026 opportunities fall into mature hubs, expanding primary markets, and emerging build-out locations.

Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Northern Virginia remains the country's largest data center market and its deepest concentration of specialized talent. CBRE reported 4,182 MW of wholesale inventory in Q1 2026, up 1,135.9 MW year over year, with vacancy at only 0.3%. LinkedIn estimated that Virginia held 13.5% of the U.S. data center workforce. Dallas-Fort Worth and Texas

Dallas-Fort Worth became the third-largest U.S. colocation market in Q1 2026, according to CBRE. Inventory grew 43.7% year over year to 1,249.4 MW. Another 716.7 MW was under construction, and 88% of that pipeline was already preleased. LinkedIn placed Texas at 9.6% of the U.S. data center workforce.

Indeed's posting data reveal a second map of opportunity beyond the largest capacity markets. Data center roles make up an unusually large share of local postings around Hermiston, Oregon; communities outside Columbus, Ohio; Jackson, Mississippi; and Reno, Nevada. In Columbus, Jackson, and Reno, the share of all postings coming from the ten largest technology employers moved from below 2.5% through the end of 2025 to above 10% in 2026.

CBRE identified Tennessee and West Texas as emerging North American markets in 2026. Data center demand represented 18% of Tennessee's industrial load in 2025 and is projected by the Tennessee Valley Authority to double by 2030. Construction Jobs Versus Permanent Operations Jobs

One of the most important distinctions in any data center employment report is the difference between building a facility and operating it. Construction can require hundreds or more than 1,000 workers at peak, according to the Data Center Coalition, while a completed building may support dozens to hundreds of direct positions depending on its size, design, ownership model, tenants, and outsourcing strategy.

That does not make construction employment less valuable. A multi-building campus can create years of work, and skilled trades often move from one project to the next within a growing region. It does mean that a headline construction number should not be presented as the permanent headcount of a completed facility.

Permanent operations teams are usually smaller and more specialized. They cover hardware, networks, critical facilities, security, logistics, compliance, leadership, and vendor coordination across multiple shifts. Colocation sites may also host tenant employees and contractors who work inside the facility but are not counted in the operator's payroll.

How Many U.S. Data Center Jobs Are There?

The honest answer depends on what is counted. The Census Bureau reported that employment in data centers and related hosting industries grew from 306,000 in 2016 to 501,000 in 2023, an increase of more than 60%. Its analysis found that California held 17% of employment and Texas 10%; California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Georgia together accounted for more than 40%.

PwC's broader 2026 economic-contribution study estimated 1,005,080 direct industry jobs in 2024. The market favors workers who combine a solid primary trade or technical discipline with mission-critical operating habits.

For IT and hardware technicians: server components, troubleshooting, Linux basics, out-of-band management, ticketing, change control, structured cabling, fiber handling, inventory accuracy, and clear handoffs.

For network and fiber roles: Ethernet, IP addressing, VLANs, optics, connector inspection, loss testing, cable documentation, high-speed fabrics, and disciplined work around live production links.

For critical facilities roles: electrical one-lines, UPS systems, generators, batteries, switchgear, HVAC and refrigeration, controls, BMS/DCIM tools, alarms, preventive maintenance, and safe operating procedures.

For construction and commissioning: drawings, submittals, schedules, QA/QC, functional testing, issue tracking, safety programs, turnover documentation, and cross-discipline coordination.

The 2026 outlook is strong, not guaranteed. Power availability is the largest constraint in many markets. CBRE reported record-low vacancy even as North American inventory in the four largest markets grew 33% year over year, but it also documented long utility-interconnection timelines, zoning challenges, and community scrutiny.

Hiring can lag an announcement by years. A company may secure land before it has power, permits, financing, or a final construction schedule. Candidates should give more weight to active construction, equipment installation, commissioning, and posted roles than to an early project announcement.

Employer concentration is another risk. With 71% of 2026 postings tied to the ten largest technology firms in Indeed's analysis, a change in capital plans can affect an entire local market. Contractors and staffing providers may also ramp quickly for a deployment and reduce headcount after turnover.

Finally, automation will change task mix. Remote monitoring, robotics, predictive maintenance, and software-defined infrastructure may reduce some routine work while increasing demand for technicians who can troubleshoot complex physical systems, interpret telemetry, and coordinate vendors. The most resilient career strategy is to build depth in a core discipline and add adjacent skills over time.
